An honest and
authentic take on Jim McCarthy. Take it or leave it.
I work in radio full time as a Creative Services Director
in Nashville, TN.
This VidSigs thing is a part-time endeavor at the moment.
When I started in radio, I was
bright-eyed and stoked to be able to bring life to ordinary words on a page with my burgeoning
audio production skills. I loved
working with station clients who
would parade into the studio with their latest scripts for me to
whittle down and work together into what we thought was a
great commercial for their business.
I quickly found that I am a creature of
change.
I began to grow tired of the same old,
tried and not-so-true ad copy that client’s would demand.
The words became detached and irrelevant to my ears and I’m sure the
station’s listening audience grew tired of them long before I even ventured into
the picture. This was certainly the
case when the some of our clients wanted to do a testimonial ad using their
customers.
Here’s how it would break down:
The client would write everything down
about their business that they wanted to hear come out of their customer’s
mouth. They would come in with
their customer and said customer would read their own testimony which happened
to be written by somebody else.
It was some of the most contrived, shallow and
insincere advertising I had ever heard.
It wasn’t until my
frustration reached an unnerving level that I discovered how simple authenticity
can make an ad go from mediocre to standing out like a cobra in a crib.
During one of these
testimonial sessions, I simply pulled the script away from our client’s
customer. Our client looked
somewhat puzzled, but considering we built a history together, they felt
confident to venture out onto this limb with me.
Then I simply interviewed their customer about their experience with our
client’s business.
Fast forward a few years,
several experimental videos and some influence from eHarmony.com commercials,
and you have VidSigs.
